Bubble rings are underwater vortex rings of air. The water spins around the vortex ring keeping it stable.
The faster the bubble ring spins, the more stable it becomes.
Dolphins and whales can create bubble rings quite easily and they seem to enjoy playing with them.
They can make intricate patterns. Scientists believe dolphins and whales see the water very differently than we do. The ocean is not a uniform body of water at all, but a complicated mass of layers and swirls.
Dolphins can detect the different layers with their sonar and they form a mental image much like we see things with our eyes. The twisting bubble ring vortexes probably look far more complicated and beautiful to the dolphin.
